I was fascinated when I read this quote the other day. I don’t know about you, but I find that good quotes crystallise important elements of life in such few wise words. But I feel this quote is incomplete. He has left out the most important time machine of all. What about the machine that takes you to where you live, the present?
If I were to add to this quote it might go something like this:
But one takes us to the most important place of all,
here and now. And that’s called life.
It is fine to think back on the past; to learn from past mistakes and disasters; to re-experience past pleasures and triumphs. It is fine to plan for the future; to dream of what we hope is to be. But remember where you live.
The only time that life and living actually happens is now. I know people who wait all week just for the weekend so they can live. What do you imagine they must be missing? Today is unique. It will never occur again. Never again will you have this opportunity to learn, laugh, love, live, give and receive pleasure and achieve whatever goals you may have.
Yesterday is gone, never to return (save in memories) Tomorrow is not yet here. It is impossible to experience tomorrow until it becomes today. So drift into the past or the future as you will. But don’t forget where you live.
